In a remarkable turn of events, a routine check-up led to the discovery of a liver tumor for a patient who visited Fakeeh University Hospital (FUH). His journey, guided by the expertise of Dr. Abdul Rahman El Kinge, Consultant Medical Oncology, and Dr. Alaadin Hakim, Consultant Interventional Radiology, showcases the pivotal role of a multi-disciplinary approach and Interventional Radiology in modern medicine.
The patient visited Fakeeh University Hospital accompanying his brother for a thyroid check. While he had been experiencing mild abdominal discomfort and jaundice, there was nothing disrupting his daily life. Nevertheless, he decided to undergo a routine check since the opportunity arose. The findings were unexpected and alarming.
Investigations, including an MRI and subsequent biopsy, revealed a Hepatocellular carcinoma, a primary liver tumor, size 9cm and positioned near the center of the liver. The patient had a history of chronic Hepatitis B, which had likely led to liver cirrhosis—complicating the treatment options. Typically, cases involving tumors located near major blood vessels would necessitate invasive measures like liver resection. However, in this case, the tumor's size, and the patient's advanced liver cirrhosis status (level B) made these options riskier.
Fakeeh University Hospital’s dedicated tumor board, after thorough deliberation, charted out a different course: Trans-arterial Chemoembolization (TACE). This is a minimally invasive procedure which aims to halt tumor growth and reduce its size. This strategic approach also paves the way for subsequent treatment options.
Dr. Abdul Rahman El Kinge, a very experienced Medical Oncologist played a crucial role in diagnosing the patient and is part of FUH's tumor board, emphasized, "This case underscores the importance of early diagnosis. Routine check-ups can be lifesaving, even when symptoms seem mild. In this instance, prompt action and a multi-disciplinary team approach made all the difference."
The successful Chemoembolization procedure carried out by the Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Alaadin Hakim, explained “TACE is a specialized intervention designed for patients with liver cirrhosis who may not be ideal candidates for surgery or transplantation. It's a critical step in the treatment journey, opening doors to other potential curative options."
The patient underwent TACE procedure under the expertise of Dr. Alaadin Hakim and following the procedure, the patient was discharged in stable condition, with improved symptoms, and requiring only supportive medication. He is undergoing regular follow-ups at FUH to monitor his liver condition and discuss further treatment strategies.
This case stands as a testament to the importance of routine check-ups. It highlights the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to difficult oncological conditions and collaborative efforts of FUH's medical experts in ensuring the best outcome for our patients.
