Dr. Kamalesh Pal, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon & Pediatric Urologist, saved the kidney of an 18-month-old Nigerian baby who suffered from a rare cystic lesion that happens in 1 in 100,000 newborn male babies.
Ibrahim Rabiu, an 18 month old-baby, suffered from a rare cystic lesion (Ceco-ureterocele) of the urinary bladder that affected his kidney, bladder and ureter. Due to Ibrahim's congenital condition, he had a non-functioning right kidney, but a timely intervention by Dr. Kamalesh, saved the child's left kidney.
Ibrahim Rabiu’s distressed father flew into UAE from Nigeria with their child, to consult Dr. Kamalesh Pal, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Paediatric Urologist at Fakeeh University Hospital, Dubai Silicon Oasis.
Through a surgery planned in phases, the team lead by Dr. Pal first performed a procedure called Cystoscopic de-roofing, an urgent decompression of the lesion to relieve the obstruction. A few weeks later, Laparoscopic right nephro-ureterectomy, was carried out.
In addition, Dr Pal conducted a Pneumo-Vesicoscopic Excision of bladder lesion and did a left ureteric re-implantation. These state-of-the art, minimally invasive procedures were carried out by using fine instruments and techniques, which rendered minimal pain/distress, thereby ensuring faster recovery within a couple of days. This enabled resumption of normal urinary functions for baby Ibrahim, who was able to return to his hometown with his parent soon after the surgery.
Dr. Pal adds, “We were happy to provide a complete solution to the child’s condition and save his left kidney. The child will now require regular follow-ups. We would like to tell the parents and guardians of other young patients with similar condition to seek medical help urgently, when a similar congenital anomaly is noticed. Timely intervention can not only prevent pain and further deterioration of the condition but can also save the healthy kidneys in time.”
“I was quite impressed with the quality of care offered to us at Fakeeh University Hospital, during my son's surgery. Everything from the facility, friendliness of the staff was great and the procedure itself was done in a professional and caring manner. I am quite impressed with the service,”said a happy Umar Rabiu – Ibrahim Rabius father.
