Patient's Complex Fibroid Treatment

A 1095-G uterine fibroid (19 cms in size) was removed by a laparoscopic myomectomy on the patient

A 31-year-old female patient recently visited Fakeeh University Hospital with a case of large uterine fibroid, which was diagnosed 6 months ago, after she suffered a miscarriage. Her condition was associated with pressure symptoms.

In an already difficult time for the patient, unfortunately, she was not offered the option of removing her uterine fibroid in Canada through minimally invasive surgery. She only had the choice of an open surgery to remove a fibroid this huge in size, which could be compared in size to a 30-week pregnant uterus.

As the patient already had a spontaneous miscarriage due to this large uterine fibroid, she definitely was planning to remove this fibroid in a safe manner, in order to be able to get pregnant again.

“Just by sheer virtue of the size, doctors in Canada were not able to offer us a minimally-invasive surgery. Me and my husband were not comfortable with this option, as we were hoping to benefit from the various medical advancements that are now available for such conditions,” shares the patient.

This is where Dubai’s Fakeeh University Hospital came to her assistance. After she consulted Dr. Ghassan Lotfi, HOCD and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Master Surgeon in Minimally Invasive Gynecology at Fakeeh University Hospital, she was assured of a minimally-invasive and safe procedure called a laparoscopic myomectomy.

Speaking on why she chose Fakeeh University Hospital, she further says, “Beyond his experience and expertise on the surgery, Dr. Ghassan Lotfi was extremely empathetic, we felt really ‘heard’ in the teleconsultation with him. I wanted to get back on my feet as soon as possible, after the surgery, and he assured us of the same. These were our deciding moments to choose Fakeeh University Hospital.”

After the patient and her husband flew in from Toronto, Canada, the surgery was conducted successfully and with no complications by the highly competent team at the hospital.

“Such laparoscopic surgeries on huge uterine fibroids are challenging, in the sense of being able to perform this complicated surgery safely and without bringing any harm to the uterus or other abdominal organs,” avers Dr. Lotfi.

In this case, the patient could go home on the next day of the procedure and was able to travel back home, to Canada, within the two weeks after her surgery.

This is a massive benefit of a laparoscopic procedure, which ensures faster recovery and reduced length of stay for patients. Something that Fakeeh University Hospital has been actively implementing for its patients, making the hospital an increasingly preferred healthcare provider of choice in the region and beyond.
